THE CLASH - OUT OF CONTROL, 1984

Original promotional flyer, 6"x8".

After the break up with Mick Jones in September 1983, Strummer and Simonon regrouped with new band members on an extended self-financed tour. That the experiment ended a year later with the Bernie Rhodes-engineered debacle of the Cut The Crap album tends to obscure how revitalised Strummer was in this period. Greil Marcus: "I'd never seen Strummer more exhilarated, or more convincing".

thumbnail link to original Burt Goldblatt photograph Louis Armstrong

LOUIS ARMSTRONG - BURT GOLDBLATT, 1961

Original photograph by Burt Goldblatt, 10"x8".
© Burt Goldblatt label on reverse.
Provenance: Burt Goldblatt collection.

Fine shot of Armstrong, reading sheet music on the piano, at the recording of 'The Real Ambassadors' with Dave Brubeck in September 1961.

ZOOT SIMS - BURT GOLDBLATT, 1958

Original silver gelatin photograph by Burt Goldblatt, c.9"x8".
Handwritten Burt Goldblatt notation on the reverse: "Zoot Sims listens to a playback 1958 NYC".
Provenance: Burt Goldblatt collection.

Burt Goldblatt was a pioneering and remarkably versatile modern graphic designer, illustrator and photographer, who created now-classic jazz record sleeves from the early 1950s for Bethlehem, Savoy, EmArcy, Verve, Atlantic, and other labels.

Outstanding image of the great tenor man, one of Woody Herman's original "Four Brothers".

thumbnail link to original Burt Goldblatt photograph Charles Mingus

CHARLES MINGUS - BURT GOLDBLATT, 1960

Original silver gelatin photograph by Burt Goldblatt, 10"x8".
Burt Goldblatt annotated label on reverse.
Provenance: Burt Goldblatt collection.

This image appears to be from the photo shoot undertaken for the cover of the 1960 album 'Mingus Revisited'.
The photographer's hand written label on the back indicates the photograph's page no. in his 1982 book 'Jazz Gallery One'.

thumbnail link to original Virgin Records logo poster

ROGER DEAN - VIRGIN RECORDS, 1972

Original Pace Minerva poster, 33" x 23.5".
Artwork by Roger Dean.

Whilst his brother Martyn designed and fitted out the new Virgin shops, brother Roger worked on the graphics side, creating the famous logo of the label's early years.

thumbnail link to original Blondie poster Autoamerican

BLONDIE - AUTOAMERICAN, 1980

Original Chrysalis promo poster, 38"x20".
Art by Martin Hoffman.

Autoamerican saw Blondie's focus becoming more diffuse, but 'Rapture' was a groundbreaking early Pop-Rap classic.

Martin Hoffman became part of the NASA Art Program in the 1980s, assigned to document five shuttle launches, with special access to restricted areas. These paintings were exhibited at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.

For the artwork, the band were photographed on a rooftop at Broadway and 8th Avenue.

thumbnail link to original Chrysalis Blondie banner poster Parallel Lines

BLONDIE, PARALLEL LINES 1978

Original Chrysalis promo poster, 12"x38".
Design by Ramey Communications, photography Edo Bertoglio.

'Parallel Lines' was Blondie's third album and their greatest success, with four hit singles coming off it. The design captured perfectly their New Wave/classic Pop mix.

thumbnail link to Bruce Springsteen original Born in the USA tour 1984 poster

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - BORN IN THE USA TOUR, 1984

Original CBS tour promo poster, 38"x20".
Photography by David Gahr.

David Gahr was one of the greatest American music photographers and an early chronicler of Springsteen, shooting the cover for 1973's The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle.

thumbnail link to original Hawkwind poster Hall of the Mountain Grill

HAWKWIND - HALL OF THE MOUNTAIN GRILL, 1974

Original promo poster, 24.5"x17".
Artwork by Barney Bubbles.

Before his celebrated designs for Stiff, Radar et al, Barney Bubbles created a spectacular body of work for Hawkwind. The band's manager Doug Smith has called Bubbles 'the most important artist of our generation' for the visual identity he created for artists, whereas Peter Saville has simply said "Barney Bubbles should be canonised".

thumbnail link to original Virgin promo poster The Sex Pistols The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle, American Express withdrawn design

THE SEX PISTOLS - THE GREAT ROCK'N'ROLL SWINDLE, 1979

Original Virgin promo poster, 39.5"x27.5".
Design by Jamie Reid.

This infamous design was subject to a successful injunction by American Express. Genuine original examples are very hard to find. NB beware numerous recent repros.

This poster comes with a unique provenance from an employee of Virgin Records at the time.

thumbnail link to original US promo poster

SUPERTRAMP - CRISIS? WHAT CRISIS, 1975.

Original US promo display, 24"x 24".
Design Paul Wakefield, Fabio Nicoli and Dick Ward.

Although the album was made under rushed circumstances, it was an accomplished work that built on the band's growing audience. The cover concept was sketched out by Rick Davies during a break in the frustrating recording sessions.

thumbnail link to original Kraftwerk Computer World London tour dates poster 1981 poster

KRAFTWERK - COMPUTER WORLD TOUR, 1981

Original London tour dates poster.

Superb design for Kraftwerk's three London dates on the 'Computer World' tour, the high point of their worldwide popularity: Lyceum, Hammersmith Palais, Hammersmith Odeon.

Very scarce; we've only seen this poster once before.

thumbnail link to original 1978 promo poster Kraftwerk Man Machine

KRAFTWERK - THE MAN-MACHINE, 1978

Original Capitol promo poster, 30"x20".
Art direct and lettering Karl Klefisch, photography by Guenter Froehling.

Striking design owing an obvious debt to Soviet Constructivism (El Lissitzky is acknowledged in the credits). The album features two of Kraftwerk's best known tracks, The Model and The Robots. Scarce.

thumbnail link to original Roxy Music ATCO promo poster Siren

ROXY MUSIC - SIREN, 1975

Original ATCO promo poster, 19"x26".

The sophisticated shocks of Roxy's early albums were matched by the warped glamour of their famous covers, never more so than on 1975's acclaimed 'Siren', where mermaid Jerry Hall crawls across the rocks of Anglesey's South Stack coast.
This poster rarely survives in such good condition.

thumbnail link to original Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers promo poster

THE ROLLING STONES - STICKY FINGERS, 1971

Original Rolling Stones Records promo poster, 35"x23".
Photography by David Montgomery.

Sticky Fingers was the band's first release on their own Rolling Stones label (and the first to sport the lips logo), and the first with Mick Taylor fully on board. Like Exile it wasn't entirely well received by contemporary critics; like Exile it's now regarded as the Stones at their absolute peak.

thumbnail link to original Faces 1973 tour poster, art by Craig.

THE FACES, US TOUR, 1973

Original tour poster 22 ¼x33¼
Art by Craig.

Striking and very unusual poster design for The Faces' 1973 North American tour. A section of the artwork was used on the subsequent live LP 'Coast to Coast: Overture and Beginners''. Printed on card stock.

thumbnail link to original Faces 1973 tour poster, art by Craig.

ADAM ANT - VIVE LE ROCK 1985.

Original promo poster, 40"x60"
Art by Craig.

Adam's third album after the whirlwind rise and split of Adam and the Ants was hindered by record company under-promotion and a long delayed release which negated the chart success of the single 'Apollo 9'. The album was reissued in 2005 to greater acclaim. Producer Tony Visconti said of him "What a creative ball of energy! He was great to work with."

thumbnail link to original 1979 A & M promo poster The Police Regatta de Blanc

THE POLICE - REGATTA DE BLANC, 1979.

Original A & M promo poster, 20"x30"
Photography James Wedge.

Multi-talented James Wedge has enjoyed successful careers variously as a top milliner, Kings Road boutique owner (clients The Beatles and Rolling Stones) and a leading fashion photographer.

thumbnail link to original Peter Max London Arts Gallery Exhibition Poster, 1970

PETER MAX - London Arts Gallery Exhibition Poster, 1970

Original exhibition poster, 19.5"x24"

Few artists sum up a whole era as thoroughly as the work of Peter Max evokes the playful psychedelia of the 60s. His playful imagery captured the imagination of a whole generation and launched the young artist to remarkable fame and fortune.

thumbnail link to original 1982 CBS promo poster Culture Club Kissing to be Clever

CULTURE CLUB - KISSING TO BE CLEVER, 1982

Original CBS promo poster, 23"x35.5"

Unusual and superior poster for Culture Club's debut album, which featured the huge international hit 'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me'.

thumbnail link to original 1977 The Clash White Riot tour poster

THE CLASH - WHITE RIOT TOUR, 1977

Original tour poster, 38.5"x29".

Original White Riot tour poster, which doubled as a plug for the first album. With the LP and 'White Riot' single out, the band - and Punk - exploded out of a small club scene into broad daylight.
American photographer Kate Simon took the famous shot of the three in an alleyway in Camden Market.

thumbnail link to original 1977 UA promo poster The Stranglers, No More Heroes album

THE STRANGLERS - NO MORE HEROES, 1977

Original 20"x30" UA promo poster.

Striking poster for The Stranglers second album. The title track became one of the most played songs of the era. A successful, at times controversial, anomally within Punk, the band were really entirely unclassifiable.

thumbnail link to original Stiff poster proof Elvis Costello Get Happy Barney Bubbles design

ELVIS COSTELLO - GET HAPPY, 1980

Original F-Beat poster proof, 31"x21".
Art and design by Barney Bubbles.

'Get Happy' was the first album release on manager Jake Riviera's new label F-Beat, which he set up after Costello's split from Radar. Barney Bubbles, eschewing credits for his designs, instead placed his VAT number in tiny print; an ironic reference to his perennial financial woes.

Uncommon original proof printing.

thumbnail link to original 1964 Ken Regan photo of John Lennon on the Ed Sullivan show

JOHN LENNON - 1964

Original 8"x10" Ken Regan photograph.

As with Elvis Presley in 1956, the Beatles three February appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show were landmarks moments in popular culture, effectively marking the beginning of the British Invasion and the greatest love affair of any country for any band in history. Ken Regan was one of America's top political, sports and rock photographers.

thumbnail link to original c.1977 Chalkie Davies photograph of Debbie Harry

DEBBIE HARRY - BLONDIE, c.1977

Original 6.5"x8.5" Chalkie Davies photograph.

Very likely from around the time of the release of 'Plastic Letters' and its UK hit single 'Denis'.
Chalkie Davies was one of Britain's leading rock photographers, with extensive work for the NME in this period.
Photographer's stamp on verso.

thumbnail link to original c.1979 Richard Creamer photograph of Debbie Harry

DEBBIE HARRY - BLONDIE, c.1979

Original 8"x10" Richard Creamer photograph.

Terrific original photo with Debbie Harry in front of the Hollywood sign by Richard Creamer, one of the leading (and most popular amongst his subjects) American rock photographers of the 70's.
Photographer's stamp on verso.

thumbnail link to original 1977 Paul Canty photograph of Marc Bolan, T Rex playing at Newcastle City Hall

MARC BOLAN - T REX, Newcastle 1977

Original 8"x10" Paul Canty photograph.

Almost certainly from the 10th March 1977 'Dandy in the Underworld' tour date at Newcastle City Hall, with The Dammed in support.
Bolan's career enjoyed a sadly cut-short resurgence in the early years of Punk, of which he was a keen supporter.
Detailed credits on verso.

thumbnail link to original c.1977 Andre Csillag photograph of Elvis Costello

ELVIS COSTELLO - c.1977

Original 6.5"x8.5" Andre Csillag photograph.

Costello is playing his signature Fender Jazzmaster guitar.

thumbnail link to original 1977 Swan Song promo photograph Led Zeppelin, Page and Plant on stage

LED ZEPPELIN, 1977

Original Swan Song promo photograph, 10"x8".

Superb original Swan Song promo still. Jimmy is wearing the red poppy white Dragon Suit. These outfits were inspired by the extravagant suits designed by Nudie Cohn for stars of Country music, and adopted famously by Gram Parsons and The Flying Burrito Brothers.
Photographer's stamp on verso.
